Africa Blogs - Dragoman Overland

On the 'Zanzibar, Zambezi and the Falls' (YDF) trip, Sarah from the Dragoman Operations department spends three epic weeks travelling overland from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe through Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania before reaching Zanzibar.   Victoria Falls (Days 1 & 2) I arrived in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe with a bag that was too big for me and a lot of excitement in my stomach. Emerging from the airport I met two of my fellow travellers and we shared a transfer, chatting away to easily break the ice. Approaching Vic Falls Rest Camp, I immediately spotted the big orange truck I’ve…

As the Destination Manager for Africa I love any excuse to get out and experience more of the continent that I love. This time round it was the Danakil Depression on my Addis to Gondar Dragoman trip that was the true highlight. This 3 day stint is one of the lowest and hottest places on earth and was packed with one stunning experience after another. We began with a briefing from one of our guides the evening before we set off. She had 12 rather nervous faces looking intently at her trying to absorb every word of her advice. Mainly,…

Dara, our wanderlust-filled sales consultant got the opportunity to go on our Cairo to Khartoum (ZCK) trip earlier in May 2018.

Nathan, our intrepid design and marketing guru ventured into the forests of Uganda in search of the famous mountain gorillas. He takes us through some of the highlights of his awesome trip below! "Hell yes!" was my immediate response when I was asked if I wanted to join one of our tours heading out to Uganda to complete one of the world famous gorilla treks. I'd always heard about this ultimate wildlife experience but I'd never thought I'd get the chance to do it myself, but here I was standing at the visitors centre in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda, with our guide…

Our Destination Manager, Helen, got to experience our new Kilimanjaro trek earlier on this year. Here's her story of her climb to success...   ‘Jambo’ calls one of the porters as he walks past, loaded up with bags and equipment, balanced perfectly on his head.   The mountain creates the major source of employment for people living in the towns surrounding Mt Kilimanjaro and the porters, cooks and guides that work here, make the most of it.  Around camp they joke, banter and dance around as they put up tents and prepare food, there’s a great atmosphere here.     Mt…

What's it really like to climb Mount Kilimanjaro? Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. The mountain is actually a dormant volcano which consists of three volcanic cones. The peak of Kilimanjaro is called Uhuru Peak and stands at 5,895m or 19,341 feet above sea level. The ascent is not considered to be a technically difficult ascent as no special climbing equipment is required but it can be a challenging ascent due to the rate that people make the climb. The longer that you take to ascend then the higher the probability you have…
