Mozambique is the 36th largest country in the world. It is bordered by 6 other African nations and has a coastline on the Indian Ocean. The official language is Portuguese although this is only spoken by approximately half of the population.
The country has suffered through 16 years of civil war. This ended in 1992 and since then has been working towards improving its economy and infrastructure. Tourism has started to play a larger part within the country especially along the East coast.
Mozambique has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons, the wet season and the dry season. During the wet season much of the country is cut off due to a poor road network. A 4x4 is needed to successfully pass through the country.
The wildlife in Mozambique was decimated during the civil war however now it is starting to return to good levels. There are over 700 different bird species alone within the country. The establishment of nature reserves and national parks have been partly responsible for protecting the countries natural heritage.
